Sponsor Licence – Skilled Worker is a permission granted by the Home Office to UK-based employers, allowing them to sponsor non-UK nationals for employment under the Skilled Worker visa route. To obtain a licence, employers must meet eligibility criteria, comply with sponsor duties, and demonstrate a genuine need for a sponsored role that meets skill and salary requirements.

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is an electronic document issued by a licensed UK sponsor to a migrant worker, confirming that they have been offered a genuine job that meets the requirements of the relevant visa route. A CoS is mandatory for Skilled Worker visa applications and contains details of the role, salary, and sponsor. It must be assigned through the Sponsor Management System (SMS).

Sponsor Licence Duties and Compliance refer to the legal obligations that UK employers must fulfil after obtaining a sponsor licence. These include monitoring sponsored workers, maintaining accurate records, reporting changes via the Sponsor Management System (SMS), and ensuring all roles meet visa requirements. Sponsors must comply with Home Office regulations to retain their licence and may be subject to audits or compliance visits at any time.

An education provider can apply for a licence in two categories: Student (to sponsor individuals aged 16 or over who come to the UK for their post-16 education) and Child Student (for students aged 4-17 who come to the UK to study at independent schools), and has to be listed on the Register of Student Sponsors.

Licensed student sponsor (approved educational provider) is responsible for issuing  a reference number (called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)) once they have offered a student Unconditional offer of a place to on the course.
